Maesbury Canal Festival – one of the best little local festivals of 2012! Photo (c) Liz Callan on Flickr

Just spent a lovely afternoon at the Maesbury Canal Festival – almost certainly one of the best little local summer festivals of 2012.

Narrowboats, horse-drawn boats, steam engines, swing boat rides, rope-winding and blacksmithing demos, dog show, home cooked pizzas, real ale, scones, strawberries and cream, victoria sponge and raspberries – even a jazz band. And all under glorious sunshine: it couldn’t have been a more perfect day.

Lots of crafts on display, too: there was rug-knitting and wood-working near the smithy. Couldn’t see any artists, which was a bit of a shame, but there was lots of Roses & Castles painted work for sale and on view. Any Inside Out artists interested in having a stall next year?

I’ve been to the Canal Central cafe before (always excellent tea and fantastic scones), and walked up and down the canal many times, but I’d never been to the Canal Festival before. But now that I’ve been, I’ll make sure to put it on my list for next summer!
