Uplifting and enriching gathering at Hilary Cowley-Greer’s today!

Hilary lives in a beautiful and fascinating house, parts of which date back to the 17 hundreds. Her new main studio for painting and related works has an original tiled floor an open fire and light streaming in through the leaded light windows. A stunning charcoal drawing of Eleanor Bron is a work in progress and other drawings and paintings are also on display. We were treated to a demonstration of how Hilary works her copper and iron wire figures, some of which she intends to embed in glass panels.

The house is resplendent with many artworks, both her own and those of artists she  and her husband collect.

A tiny room with a ceramic kiln is off the well stocked walled back garden, bursting with every kind of inspiration for an artist.

Hilary explained various kiln processes using clay, plaster casts, silicone casts and glass firings.

We spent a good hour after tea talking about our art, exhibitions and other artists. Huge thanks to Hilary for a most enjoyable afternoon.

If you are an artist living near the North Wales border reading this and would be willing to host  group of artists one afternoon to share your practice and discover something about theirs, just get in touch with Diana on

Message from Ruth Thomas

Hello all,

Just letting you know that my new website was completed recently – and I’m very pleased with it – with the addition of a ‘Workshops’ section, providing details of printmaking courses for adults in my studio. You may like to take a look!

For those interested in workshops, there is one place available on a three day course from 24th – 26th March, ‘Printmaking with collage: the complete picture’. This will cover relief and intaglio approaches to making and printing a collagraph and is suitable for any subject matter.

There are also two new courses, or rather a repeat of ones that have run before: ‘Cut & collage – creative printmaking’ on Saturday 20th May and ‘Natural Impressions’ on Saturday 10th June.

For full details and to book a place please go to the ‘Workshops’ section of the website.

If you happen to be at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Mold, before 4th April, you might like to take a look in the Education Gallery, where you will see some wonderful prints produced by primary school children, during my recent residency in Flintshire schools.

Best wishes,

Ruth Thomas

***WORKING & FUNDRAISING AS A COMMUNITY ARTIST*** Saturday 11th of March in Newtown at Glanhafren Market Hall This session aims to demystify the term community artist and participatory arts, show you how to fundraise successfully and deliver work for other arts organisations, schools, galleries, venues and the like. There will be a session on fundraising delivered by PAVO and supporting hands on practical sessions lead by Arts Connection. Hear about pop up participatory arts at Oriel Davies as we reflect on the ‘Open Space’ project and find out about opportunities for its second year. We finish the day with a panel discussion focused on living and working as a community artist involving two artists, Arts Connection’s Arts Manager Siân Walters and Alison Pierse the Art & Design Coordinator from Aberystwyth University. Both organisations employ community artists and are happy to answer your questions. We are hoping to inspire and show how to make a living.
