In Pound Shop Logic, Mayman and Jones present a sculptural installation that recalls a stage set or festival site; a world of shifting scale, pulsating colour, hallucinatory landscape, and cult ritual.
The work comprises forms and characters developed by the artists during an activity they describe as live montage; a process where they reanimate their archive of images and sounds in improvised performances. This is an important element in the work they produce collaboratively as Datamosh.
These structures and situations represent a desire to find the potential for transcendence in the everyday. The environment in which Mayman and Jones work is both reflected and distorted through the prism of live montage creating a response to the world which is simultaneously pragmatic and utopian; down to earth yet magical.
This collaboration came about when artists Paul R Jones and Guy Mayman discovered a large archive of 35mm slides, audio cassettes and A4 booklets earmarked for destruction at the Art School where they were working. This material was no longer wanted because of a perception that it had been rendered obsolete by digital and wifi.
Mayman and Jones are fascinated by the hallucinogenic possibilities of everyday experience. Their ongoing project DATAMOSH is a site of excavation and construction, awakening the analogue spectre of the recent past. It re-animates obsolete technology and information, developing a montage of psychedelic improvisation and performance.
