Myra Rob and I attended the curatorial tour and talk on these two artists at Tate Liverpool yesterday.
Seeing an artist none of us knew alongside one we do know, and seeing them both from some very different perspectives was a real privilege. Lassnig had explored so many things through portraiture, and in particular our relationships to technology, that it put me in mind of Mike Corcoran’s recent ground breaking exhibition at Glyndwr Sycharth Gallery where the artists examined the extent of our minds in relation to technology. Whilst Bacon and Lessnig appeared not to have met, there were many similarities in their exploration of the human condition. A most enjoyable evening. Thanks to Myra for encouraging us to go!
Thank you for the posting on the duel exhibition at Tate Liverpool. I am sure I would have benefitted from a lecture/talk. I felt the two artists were very far apart. Maria Lessnig’s work didn’t quite resonate with me in the same way as Francis Bacons. I felt the imagery didn’t have enough bite and lacked dept somewhat. I am sure I need to revisit her images and give them a second chance. I almost sped through her exhibition to get to the Bacon. However, it was a great visit to Tate Liverpool as usual and would recommend it.
