With all the good weather this week, now’s the time to get out and about! Lots of great drawing and painting opportunities in the hills around the Ceiriog Valley. Not up to a mountain climb? Try this walk around Chirk Castle and the Shropshire Union Canal.

Out in the most glorious weather today – bright, sunny and positively hot, the day feeling more like May than February. As the weather was so fine, we were spoiled for choice when it came to chosing where to go for a walk. Finally decided on a circular route from the Chirk Castle gates, through the castle grounds, along the lanes towards the Chirk-Llangollen stretch of the Shropshire Union Canal, and then down the canal towpath back towards Chirk.

We’ve done this walk before. It’s a lovely circuit – you’re in sight of the castle all through the first half of the walk, and then down along the quiet of the canal for the second half. There are no strenuous hills, no rocky escarpments, no wide stretches of moorland – just rolling farmland, empty country lanes and long, straight canal banks: you’d hardly believe this was Wales!
