We have a great placement for a graduate interested in gaining 10 weeks’ experience of working in Oriel Davies Gallery, one of the key public art galleries in Wales. The successful applicant will work on specific projects within the gallery and support the Exhibitions Curator and the Education Officers.

 Based in Newtown, Powys, Oriel Davies Gallery presents world-class, thought-provoking and challenging art by national and international artists in an environment that is welcoming, engaging, informative and free. The Gallery and exhibition spaces are family-friendly, physically accessible and ideal for experiencing contemporary art. Oriel Davies also runs a broad mix of stimulating workshops, courses, talks and events. The Gallery is also widely known for its innovative offsite projects and outreach programmes for schools, colleges and the wider community.  What will you be doing?

 The successful applicant will work with and support the Exhibitions Curator and the Education Officers on specific projects. This will include assisting the Curator with the administration, organisation and installation of visual arts exhibitions. In addition, the candidate will assist the Education Officers with various projects, with a particular focus on a reminiscence oral history project, as well as assisting with educational workshops, events and activities.

Information for International Students

GO Wales is an EU-funded scheme and so students from EU countries only can take part. Graduates from any country can take part, but graduates from outside the EU must have the appropriate working visa (not a student visa). Although student visas do allow non-EU students to work full time over the summer, our funding restrictions do not allow this. Essential Requirements :

You need to have:

–      A degree in any of the following: fine art / applied arts / art history / literature / arts administration / media studies / art education

–      Excellent computer skills (knowledge of applemac, MS Office)

–      Willingness to undertake hands-on work

–      Writing and proof reading experience

–      Good interpersonal and organisational skills

Whilst not essential, experience with digital recording software, sound files and equivalent would be an advantage.

Expected Outcomes :

By the end of the placement you will have gained experience in exhibition curation and arts administration. You will also have gained experience with gallery education, arts education administration and visitor liaison.


An integral part of GO Wales work placements is the City and Guilds Professional Development Award; all individuals on placement complete this short work based qualification which allows them and the host employer to make the most of the experience.
